Ocelotl [oh-say-lo] : “Jaguar Warrior” in the Aztec language of Nahuatl
AZTEC JAGUAR WARRIORS: KNIGHTS OF THE NEW WORLD
The Knights of the Round Table weren’t the only game in town. The Aztecs had their own elite soldiers. The Jaguar Warriors were renowned for their leadership and skill both on and off the battlefield. These New World knights were full-time warriors, entrusted with keeping the peace and defending the empire.
SYMBOLISM IN THE OCELOTL PENDANT
The Warrior – The uniform of the Jaguar Warriors, the jaguar headdress honors the warrior’s patron god Tezcatlipoca and grants him all the power, strength, and cunning of the big cat.
The Jaguar – Beautiful and deadly, the Aztecs considered the jaguar to be spiritually on par with humans. Like man, they are the ultimate hunter and master of their domain.
The Lip Plug – The Jaguar Warriors were the most elite soldiers of their time, but only the greatest of among them were gifted a turquoise stone lip plug by the emperor.
The Bail – Formed by a double-headed snake clutched in the beak of an eagle, the snake represents fertility, rebirth, and the afterlife.
The Reverse – Two great warriors clash atop an Aztec pyramid.
Turquoise – This sacred blue-green stone was more precious to the Aztecs than gold. Objects made of turquoise were often sacrificed to the gods, and the stone was believed to have healing properties.
