Medusa had a bad rap. As beautiful as she was terrifying, so powerful and yet vulnerable, she embodied both good and evil. She's the ultimate dichotomy…but aren't we all? As infamous as her destructive force was, it's often forgotten that she was also a potent life-giver–even in death. These days, she's become a universal symbol of feminine strength, resilience, and grace under pressure. And we think it's high time she got her due.

PATRONA PENDANT SYMBOLISM

Medusa – The name Medusa means “Guardian.” She is one of the three Gorgon sisters in Greek and Roman mythology, with snakes in place of hair and the power to turn men to stone with a single glance

Cracked Face – Unlike her sisters, Medusa was born a mortal. The cracking of her face suggests both her power to petrify and her mortality

Snakes – The three snakes comprising the locks of Medusa’s hair represent the three Gorgon sisters: Stheno (the Mighty), Euryale (the Far Roaming), and Medusa (the Guardian)

Blood droplet – Medusa's blood had special powers. After her death, the drops of her blood that fell to the ground regenerated into venomous snakes. Her blood also became a powerful elixir with the power to revive the dead. And where her blood spilled into the ocean, it created the thriving coral reefs of the Red Sea

Wings – A reference to the winged sandals of the god Hermes, which he lent to Perseus for his quest to find Medusa

Sword – A reference to Medusa’s Guardian status and a symbol of protection
